Why We Joined the International Test Commission

The International Test Commission (ITC) is an organization dedicated to the advancement of professional test development and the promotion of quality standards in testing. Since its founding in the 1970s, the ITC has grown into a truly international body establishing and promoting best practices for the development, measurement and use of assessments, including assessments for different linguistic and cultural audiences, and diverse populations.

ITC Guidelines Are the Bedrock of Our Work

The International Test Commission’s guidelines are integral to one of our core competencies at Responsive Translation—translating and adapting tests and assessments for education, health, psychology and human resources. Our go-to publications are: the “ITC Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests (Second Edition)” and the “ITC Guidelines for the Large-Scale Assessment of Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Populations.”

While all of our work is guided by our rigorous implementation of ISO 9001 quality assurance standards for continuous quality improvement, the bedrock of all of our test and assessment work is the International Test Commission’s series of guidelines. They provide us with a solid best practice framework and help ensure that we serve all test stakeholders to the highest standard possible.

At Responsive Translation we’ve long respected the International Test Commission’s work and I’ve talked about the ITC several times here on the blog, including my take last year on the “ITC Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests (Second Edition).” Naturally, we decided that the time had come to take the plunge and join the organization.

Luxembourg and Beyond

All of us here at Responsive Translation look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the International Test Commission, lending our decades of experience in the business of translating and adapting high-stakes tests and assessments, and to learn from the experience of others.

The next International Test Commission Conference will be held in Luxembourg from July 14-17, 2020 with the theme being “Diversity and Equity in a Globalized Digital World: Opportunities and Challenges for Assessment.” In addition, and of particular interest to us, one of the conference’s sub-themes will be: “test development and validation in international and multicultural environments.” We’re not sure who from the team will be attending yet, but just the same we hope to see you at the International Test Commission Conference in Luxembourg and elsewhere around the world.

We look forward to being active members of the ITC and continuing to promote quality and equality in testing.
