In those moments of my greatest professional agitation, one phrase rings in my head over and over again. It is a line from the greatest performance, in the greatest scene, in the greatest movie ever made: Treasure of Sierra Madre. Alfonso Bedoya, spitting out that immortal line, “Badges? We ain’t got no badges. We don’t need no badges! I don’t have to show you any stinkin’ badges!” (I’ve probably used that line several times in this blog already, but I’m ever ready to return to the font of cinematic wisdom.) What follows is the localization industry-localized version of Rossen’s script that never saw the silver screen―just one more time when Translation Guy ended up on the cutting room floor.
Production Note: The musical score for this dramatization that was inspired by an actual, previously top-secret sales strategy session is available on YouTube: Ennio Morricone’s unforgettable “Ecstasy of Gold” from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
