Is “How do you do?” just another way of asking, “Who are you?” Deb Fallows of the Atlantic has been looking at the geography of greetings around the United States. Same with “Where are you from?” Fallows asked readers to contribute local favorites and to consider what is really those questions, necessary to pin down the person your shaking hands with.
Fallows recommends “Tell me your story,” but I’ve tried it, and it really throws some people. But everyone here gets “Hey, howyadoin'” so I stick with that.
Katherine Wells has put together this charming video that I wanted to share with you since it’s getting kind of late-Friday-ish for a real post. Have a great weekend!
